It's a special day in Nicholas' life. It is his first day of school today. Here is a run down of the morning activities...
6:30 am - Everyone wakes up. Juliette makes her bed with no questions asked; Sophie (who ended up in our bed at some point in the night) brushes her teeth (her favorite thing to do in the whole world) and follows her siblings around the house. Nicholas, as usual, moves around the house like a sloth; requiring constant reminders to get dressed, brush his teeth etc... (he's not even a teenager yet) 7:00 am - First fight of the morning, Juliette has served herself the last of the vanilla yogurt. I came in and divided the amount between two bowls and gave all three kids butter bagels for breakfast. Sophie did an excellent job sucking the melted butter out of the bagel like some kind of baby bagel vampire. 7:19 am - The family shifted into panic mode since our "official" self-imposed departure time is 7:20. Panic mode means that we no longer ask the kids to do stuff; instead we physically do it for them. I put Nicholas' running shoes on (and ignored his request for his crocks). My wife changed Juliette's jacket and we ushered them to the bus stop. 7:25 - The bus came and scooped up 2/3 of our kids with mothers looking on, trying not to cry. Juliette is so excited to be a big sister that can show her little brother all the ropes. 7:30 - My wife insisted that we get in our car, follow the school bus to the school and make sure Nicholas is able to find his teacher.7:50 - Nicholas gets off the bus, poses for a picture, gets his nose wiped, is told by his mother that he should have brushed his hair and still somehow manages to locate his new teacher that is calling his name and is located 10ft from where he got off his bus. Somehow I think he could have managed the 10-foot walk without us (if anything we were a distraction), but at least mom had that peace of mind for the rest of the day.
